Basic Requirements for Chinese Language Courses

  • Students are required to come to class on time.
  • Students are required to ask for leave in advance if they are not able to go to class.
  • Do not miss any exam. Cheating in exams is forbidden and will be punished.
  • If students have questions about the courses, please feel free to contact the course instructors.
  • Regulations on Late Arrival and Absence in Class

Student attendance is important and closely related to student’s final score (Final score is the score appearing on the academic transcript, which is not and different from the final exam grade.) of the semester. Every case of late arrival in class will result in 1 point deducted from student’s final score. Every case of Absence in class without a leave will result in 5 points deducted from student’s final score. 5 late arrivals count as 1 absence. 3 or more absences will result in the disqualification of final exam. A warning letter will be issued to the student who has committed 5 late arrivals or 1 absence. An official notice of disqualification from final exam will be sent to the student after three warning letters are issued. The student who receives the notice will be forbidden to take part in the course final exam. For students who have more than 3 absences or 15 late arrivals in a course, they will be expelled from the course and will not obtain any academic credit or document related to the course.

  • Penalties for Cheating and Plagiarism

Cheating is prohibited. If found cheating in exams, the student will be disqualified from the exam. A student will be disqualified from final exam of the course if he/she is found cheating more than one time in the same course, and penalties will be given to the student according to the Sun Yat-sen University’s Policy on Cheating. Any form plagiarism is also prohibited in assignments and exams. A warning letter will be issued to the student who plagiarizes and student who receives 3 warning letters will be disqualified from the final exam.

  • Procedures for Transferring Classes

1. Students can apply for a transfer of class by directly contacting any course instructor of the original assigned class in the first week of the semester.

2. A written application is needed if students want to apply for a class transfer after September the first week. Students should hand in an application to any course instructor of the original assigned class and prepare for an interview from an instructor of the requested class. Only when the students pass the interview can they transfer to the new class.

  • One-on-one Tutorial

Each international student will be assigned a Chinese language tutor. The tutorial time should be no less than 3 hours per week. Students are free to negotiate with their tutors about tutorial time, meeting places, and tutorial activities. The personal tutor will grade the student’s overall performance and his or her grading will account for 10% of the student’s final score of their compulsory courses.
