The Department of Translation and Interpreting aims to cultivate translators and interpreters with excellent general knowledge, practical professional skills, academic competence and a humanistic spirit. Through four years of academic training, students are expected to:

  • have a good knowledge base in both Chinese and English
  • acquire translation and interpreting skills
  • gain proficiency in utilizing translation tools
  • learn the skills of independent work and cross-culture communication
  • have a good understanding of the norms and development of the translation industry, and professional ethics

And thus after graduation, students will be able to undertake translation or interpreting tasks at the general level in fields such as culture, economics, politics, science and technology, foreign affairs and other work related to cross-culture communication. Drawing on the School’s strength in multilingual education and internationalization, the Department offers students opportunities to learn a second foreign language so as to enhance their competitiveness in a multilingual context.

Curriculum Design

The Department adheres to small-class teaching (no more than 30 students in a class), and offers general, professional and specialized courses of basic language skills, aiming to improve students’ language proficiency, encyclopedic knowledge and professional skills. The Department also took the lead in offering undergraduate students simultaneous interpreting and CAT (Computer-aided Translation) courses.

Faculty

All the full-time faculty members graduated from renowned universities both home and abroad including Beijing Foreign Studies University, Sun Yat-sen University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Bath with adequate practical experience. The Department also invites experts in the field of translation and interpreting to be involved in teaching as guest professors; among them are senior interpreters and editors from the United Nations and managers from Huawei Center for Translation and Interpreting Services.

Extracurricular Activities

The Department also encourages extracurricular activities and provides various opportunities for students to engage in translation and interpreting practice and internship. Every year, we recommend excellent students to participate in contests at provincial or national level and they have constantly achieved excellent results. The translation salon, interpreting forum and interpreting contest held by the Department have become brand name activities of our school.
