Established in 2012, the Department of International Affairs focuses on cultivating bilingual professionals with practical ability of working in a wide range of fields such as politics, economics, business, foreign affairs, media and cross-culture teaching and communication to serve the needs of national strategic development in an era of globalization and regionalization. Students are required to master English and another foreign language, and become familiar with the history and current situations of specific countries or regions. These students will be excellent candidates for graduate programs related to disciplines of humanities and social sciences.

International Affairs is an interdisciplinary subject involving varied pragmatic affairs in international exchanges and co-operation, in particular emphasizing the combination of systematic knowledge and practical skills (especially foreign language proficiency). SIS took the initiative to launch the major of international affairs under the English Program, guided by the principles of “humanities, bilingual proficiency and global perspective”. The Department strives to:

  • broaden students’ humanistic horizons
  • build up a sound knowledge base
  • cultivate their bilingual practical skills.

Exchange programs and joint education programs between SIS or SYSU and renowned international universities also help to enrich students’ overseas experiences and broaden their global vision.

Since 2014, the MA program at SIS has shifted its focus to international affairs. As a result, a complete training system has been established covering both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Main courses of the Department include American Studies, European Studies, and introductions to East Asia, Russia and Central Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Southeast Asia, Globalization and International Relations as well as International Institutions and International Regimes.

Faculty: Apart from its competent faculty, the Department also invites experts and scholars in related fields both at home and abroad to serve as guest professors.
