Department of Korean
Established in 2009, the Department of Korean is committed to producing Korean-speaking professionals with comprehensive and practical abilities and a global vision in line with the demands of social and economic development.
In keeping with the requirement of producing interdisciplinary professionals in languages, we encourage the students to enhance their English skills along with Korean and acquire a wide range of knowledge in other disciplines. Our aim is to cultivate practical professionals with a global vision and innovative spirit who have a good command of the Korean language as well as knowledge of the history and culture of the Korean Peninsula.
Courses & Faculty
To achieve the above objective, we offer core courses in Korean such as Elementary Korean; Listening and Speaking; Reading and Writing; and specialized courses such as Introduction to Korean Peninsula; Korean Culture; Theory and Practice in Chinese-Korean/Korean-Chinese Translation and Interpreting; China-South Korea Trade Practice and Business.
The Department has five professional teachers with two of them from South Korea. All faculty members have earned their Ph.D. or Master’s degrees overseas with rich teaching experience. Students are provided with professional guidance and abundant library resources for their studies, and numerous opportunities for social practice to enhance their language skills.
Supportive Facilities & Social Practice
The Department has its own library with a rich collection of Korean books in education, literature, history, politics, economy, culture and etc., all donated by overseas universities and institutes.
Each year the Department organizes the SYSU Korean Culture Festival, covering a wide range of activities including contests for Korean Speaking, Singing, and Dubbing, and Korean Food Fair. Students can promote their language skills and comprehensive competence through these activities. With the unremitting efforts of the faculty members and students, the Korean Culture Festival has become an annual event and an outstanding brand activity on Zhuhai campus.
Exchange Programs
The Department takes the lead in launching overseas programs in SIS. Through “3+1” exchange programs, all third-year students are sent to study at famous universities in South Korea such as Sungkyunkwan University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Kyung Hee University, Keimyung University, Dongseo University, Yeungnam University, University of Seoul and Sungshin Women's University. Exempt from tuition at these partnership universities, our students can broaden their experience and promote their language proficiency at a relatively low cost. Considering that SIS receives most international students from South Korea, we also help our students form learning partners with Korean students so that they can benefit from each other and make joint progress.
Success in Talent Cultivation
After five years of development, the Department of Korean has witnessed substantial progress in talent cultivation. Since 2012, 100% of our students have passed the Test for Korean Majors Band 4, 9.67% higher than the national average. One-third of our first batch of graduates of 2009 went on to pursue their graduate studies at world-famous universities such as Seoul National University and Korea University. We have maintained a full employment rate, with career options covering such fields as foreign affairs, business, airlines, banks, logistics, media, finance, tourism and education.
