Online Signing Ceremony for Joint Development Successfully Held Between SIS’s Second Faculty Party Branch and Hongtang Village Party Branch
On the afternoon of October 22nd, 2020, an online signing ceremony for joint development agreement was held between the Second Faculty Party Branch of the Party Committee of School of International Studies (SIS) of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and the Hongtang Village Party Branch in Fengshan Town, Fengqing County, Yunnan Province. The leaders attending the ceremony were: Wu Jinghong, Executive Vice-chairman of the labor union of SYSU and leader of the targeted poverty alleviation working group of SYSU; Wang Cheng, Party Secretary of SIS; Professor Chen Jie, Secretary of the Second Faculty Party Branch of SIS; Zhang Tingyong, member of the Standing Committee of Fengqing County committee of the CPC and Party Secretary of Fengshan Town; Wang Ke, Deputy County Mayor of the County People’s Government; Guo Hongsheng, Secretary of the Party branch committee of Hongtang Village; Lan Shude, former Director of the Party’s Office of SIS and current First Secretary of Hongtang Village. This signing activity included five agendas.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Wu Jinghong, Executive Vice-chairman of the labor union of SYSU delivered a speech. She spoke highly of the joint development of the two branches. She pointed out that SYSU has always attached great importance to poverty alleviation and insisted on taking the main battlefield of poverty alleviation as a class for fostering integrity and promoting rounded development of people. This year, the Second Faculty Party Branch of SIS’s Party Committee offered a series of online cultural courses of “Explore the World Through Reading” to the complete primary school (which teaches first to sixth grade) in Hongtang Village. This was a great practice of combining “Party building, education and the Internet” to provide assistance and support for rural education under the pandemic prevention and control. The branch joint development activity continued to deepen and broaden SYSU’s work in targeted poverty alleviation. The exploration of school-village cooperation mode on a point-to-point and regular basis embodied SYSU’s full support for Fengqing County. It also helped the faculty and staff of SYSU understand the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the grass-roots level and the conditions of China and Chinese people, through which they can better appreciate the significance of national poverty alleviation.
Then Wang Cheng, Party Secretary of SIS, mentioned that this activity followed the guidance principle of poverty alleviation. Through the activity, SIS made contributions to winning the battle against poverty and building a moderately prosperous society in all respects. The online volunteer teaching organized by SIS’s Second Faculty Party Branch was not only a contribution to poverty alleviation, but also self-education of the teachers.
Professor Chen Jie, Secretary of the Second Faculty Party Branch, then introduced the origin of this activity. After learning about the education plight in Hongtang Village through “Secretary Lan Shude’s Talks of Poverty Alleviation”, SIS’s Second Faculty Party Branch began to prepare for the online volunteer teaching. The branch joint development activity could not only provide constant knowledge support to Hongtang Village, but also put the Party building of the branch into practice.
Zhang Wenyi, Deputy Secretary of the Second Faculty Party Branch, made a subsequent speech. She pointed out that the volunteer teaching was a meaningful activity with characteristics and highlights. Seeing the children’s innocent and curious eyes when explaining knowledge to them, she felt the significance of her role as a teacher, and realized that the battle against poverty was actually not far away from her life.
Next Secretary Zhang Tingyong, leader of Fengqing County, and Deputy County Mayor Wang Ke delivered speeches respectively. Secretary Zhang first expressed his gratitude to SYSU for its comprehensive support and assistance to Fengqing County, and indicated that the branch joint development was an innovative practice of rural poverty alleviation. He also hoped that both sides could frequently learn lessons from the past and contribute to creating a new stage for rural revitalization.
Deputy County Mayor Wang thought that the activity itself was an innovative measure of intelligence assistance, which was a new way adopted by the Second Faculty Party Branch to deliver quality schooling resources to Fengqing County during the pandemic. He said that he was also greatly inspired as a poverty alleviation cadre.
Guo Hongsheng, Secretary of the Party branch committee of Hongtang Village, also made a speech. On behalf of the Hongtang Village Party Branch, he said that they would take this opportunity to strengthen learning and promote the development of Hongtang Village to a new level.

In the end of the meeting, Lan Shude, First Secretary of Hongtang Village, delivered a concluding speech. He said that persistent efforts would be made by taking the branch joint development as an opportunity and drawing on the SIS’s talent and intellectual resources to ensure that the joint development would achieve results.
“Exploring the World through Reading”, the series of online volunteer teaching activities, was an innovative attempt that the Second Faculty Party Branch of SIS took to actively practice the concept of combining Party building with education. As a Party branch comprised of teachers of minority languages, the Second Faculty Party Branch made fully use of their professional advantages. Through the internet, they explained the historical and cultural knowledge of Arab countries, South Korea, Spain, Russia, Germany and other countries for the children of Hongtang Village, which helped the students broaden their horizons and understand the world. Officially started on September 1st, 2020, the activity included various lectures, shown in the picture below.
