International Student YE MYO TUN Wins 3rd Prize in 2nd Chinese Classics Recitation, Writing and Teaching Competition

            Recently, the results of the Second National Competition of Chinese Classics Recitation, Writing and Teaching organized by the Ministry of Education and the State Language Commission were announced. Year three Myanmar international student YE MYO TUN (Chinese name Wang Dawei) of our school, a major in Korean, won the third prize in the International Student Group of the recitation contest with his recitation work Shuidiao Getou (Prelude to Water Melody).

           From May to December 2020, the competition lasted eight months and has attracted a number of contestants from the country. The competition was divided into four different contests, including classics recitation, Chinese poetry teaching, Chinese calligraphy and seal carving. Each contest set up six groups for primary school students, secondary school students, college students, international students, teachers and social amateurs. After the provincial preliminaries (preliminary selection), the national semi-finals, and the national finals (review), 900 classics recitation works, 600 Chinese poetry teaching works, 3338 calligraphy works and 300 seal carving works were announced as winners. In the classics recitation contest in which YE MYO TUN participated, 10 first prizes, 20 second prizes, 30 third prizes and 90 honorable prizes were set up. YE MYO TUN won the first prize in the Guangdong provincial preliminaries and later the third prize in the national finals.

          For years, our school has stayed committed to the educational philosophy of global perspective and serves as one of the important windows for Sun Yat-sen University to promote international people-to-people exchanges. We accept international exchange students every year, and a large number of them are the SYSU “Belt and Road” scholarship recipients. Since 2017, we have provided Chinese language learning courses to nearly 200 “Belt and Road” undergraduate scholarship students each year. YE MYO TUN is one of the scholarship recipients. His award in the competition demonstrates the strong strength of our school in multiple languages teaching and the excellent education results for international students in China.

        Introduction to the entry: The Myanmar student recites in Mandarin the classic Shuidiao Getou by the famous Chinese poet Sushi. In the second half of his recitation, YE MYO TUN also recites his own translated version of the first part in Burmese. The recitation reflects an international student’s recognition and passion for traditional Chinese culture, as well as his thought on the universal topic of joys and sorrows.
