From October 16th to 19th, the 2020 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Academic Exchanges in Foreign Languages and Translation was successfully held, which was jointly sponsored by Guangdong Society of Foreign Languages, Guangdong Provincial Foreign Literature Association, Hong Kong Translation Society and School of International Studies (SIS) of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), and hosted by the Postgraduate Student Union of SIS.

The event attracted more than 100 postgraduates from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, hitting a record high. It has become a platform for participants to carry out academic exchanges and enhance their friendship.

Combination of Online and Offline Modes
It is said that the 5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Paper Competition in Foreign Languages and Translation adopted a combination of online and offline modes due to the COVID-19, and received 163 papers from 27 universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and other areas, setting a record.
The research fields of papers ranged from foreign literature, linguistics and applied linguistics, translation studies, cross-cultural studies to international and regional studies.
Professor Chang Chenguang, Dean of SIS, said that such an academic exchange activity targeted at youngsters was well in tune with the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and played an important role in strengthening academic exchanges among teachers and students in the regions, cultivating foreign language talents and enhancing their patriotism; young students could take this opportunity to promote the coordinated development of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau with their knowledge in foreign language and translation.

The reporter learned that the event consisted of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Exchange Meeting, Expert Lectures and Opening Ceremony, the 5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Paper Competition in Foreign Languages and Translation, the 2nd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Translation Contest and the 6th National English Creative Writing Contest.
During the event, the participants also visited Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Hengqin New Area, Hengqin-Macau Youth Entrepreneurship Valley and Zhuhai Hi-tech Industrial Park to witness the vigorous development of GBA.
Dialogues on Frontiers of Disciplines and Youth Development
“This academic exchange event held by SYSU provides a good platform for excellent postgraduates to exchange ideas and serves as a good incentive for all participants,” said Jiang Mengting, a student from School of Interpretation & Translation Studies, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and the second prize winner of the Paper Competition.
It is known that this event was supported by the Department of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Ministry of Education and jointly organized by Guangdong Society of Foreign Languages, Guangdong Provincial Foreign Literature Association, Hong Kong Translation Society and the School of International Studies of SYSU.
The event adopted a combination of live and video conferences for the first time. Attendees gathering together through online and offline platforms included experts and scholars from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as 100-odd postgraduates of foreign language studies. They held dialogues on frontiers of disciplines, focused on youth development and expressed their love for the nation.
Established in 2016, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Academic Exchanges in Foreign Languages and Translation has become an influential brand academic event among foreign language and translation studies of universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau after five-year development.
