Good News | Youth Project of Guangdong Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Sciences by SIS Dr. Wu Xiaoping Approved
On October 14th, 2020, the proposed list of Youth Projects for 2020 of Guangdong Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Sciences under the 13th Five-Year Plan was released. Dr. Wu Xiaoping, an associate researcher of School of International Studies (SIS), won approval for her project The Discourse of Crises Constructed on Social Media.
Dr. Wu obtained her doctorate at the Department of English, University of Macau, and now is an associate researcher of SIS, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), and an editorial board member of Discourse, Context and Media (SSCI). Her research interests include media translation studies, social media discourse studies, and cross-cultural studies. Her articles have been published in various international SSCI journals, including Discourse Studies, Media, Culture and Society, Discourse, Context and Media, Language and Intercultural Communication and Babel.
The project The Discourse of Crises Constructed on Social Media combines theories and research methods from linguistics, sociology and communication studies to build a theoretical framework for systematically analyzing social media discourse in public crisis events. It also explores the role of social media in constructing "online communities" and participating in public events by studying the discourse strategies adopted by social media users in China and abroad in response to four crisis events.
