6th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Academic Exchanges in Foreign Languages and Translation Studies
From May 14th to 17th, 2021, the 6th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Academic Exchanges in Foreign Languages and Translation Studies was held successfully. It was co-hosted by Guangdong Society of Foreign Languages (GSFL), Guangdong Provincial Foreign Literature Association(GPFLA), Hong Kong Translation Society(HKTS), and the School of International Studies(SIS) of Sun Yat-sen University(SYSU), and organized by the Postgraduate Student Union of SIS. In response to the national prevention and control of pandemic, this Academic Exchanges was held through the combination of online and offlineconferences. Experts and scholars from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and other areas, as well as over 100 doctoral and postgraduate students of foreign languages gathered together online and offline. With the help of foreign languages, they communicated for academic exchanges about the frontier topics on foreign languages and translation, promoted their academic ability, facilitated cultural interactions and expressed their concerns about the development of youth, cities and our country in the Academic Exchanges.
01 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Icebreaker Meeting
On the evening of May 14th, 2021, participants from universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and other provinces or cities attended the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Icebreaker Meeting through Tencent Meeting, which marked the beginning of the long-prepared Academic Exchanges. Professor Zhou Hui, Deputy Dean of SIS who introduced the new development directions and landscape of SYSU as well as the brilliant prospect of Zhuhai Campus based on Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. At the end of the Icebreaker Meeting, Professor Zhou Hui summarized the result of the call for papers of this Academic Exchanges, praised participants’ academic quality and placed great hope on students majoring in foreign languages and translation.
02 Opening Ceremony
On the morning of May 15th, 2021, the 6th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Academic Exchanges in Foreign Languages and Translation Studies started. Among the offline attendees were Professor Huang Guowen, Professor Li Zhimin, Professor Chen Yang, Professor Mo Aiping, Professor Shen Jieling, Professor Huang Liyan; Professor Chang Chenguang, Huang Aicheng, Professor Dai Fan, Professor Zeng Lei, Associate Professor Xie Guixia, Associate Professor Qin Shengyong and over 100 postgraduates. And among the online attendees through Tencent Meeting were Associate Professor Li Dechao; and postgraduates from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, and other provinces or cities.
Speeches for Opening Ceremony
Professor Chen Yang, Professor Li Zhimin delivered speeches for the opening ceremony. They extended gracious welcome and sincere thanks to attendees and expressed their hope to the development of young students. They also hoped that under the guidance of scholars and experts, young students attending the Academic Exchanges had dialogues on academic frontiers so as to enhance their academic sensibility and insight and set solid foundation for becoming outstanding talents.
Keynote Speeches
Later, Professor Huang Guowen, Professor Shen Jieling, Associate Professor Li Dechao delivered keynote speeches separately. They shared their academic results and gains in Foreign Languages Learning and Research under the Vision of New Liberal Arts, The Translation and Creation of Novels in Late Qing Dynasty and the Beginning of the Republic of China, and Re-discussion on the Concept and the Essence of Translation. The audience gained a lot from their speeches.
03Parallel Sub-Forums and Creative Writing Workshop
On the afternoon of May 15th, 2021, the parallel forums and the Creative Writing Workshop were held successfully. Taking their research areas and interest into consideration, teachers and students chose to attend one of the four parallel sub-forums through Tencent Meeting, which respectively centered on foreign literature, translation studies, linguistics and applied linguistics, cross-cultural studies, and area studies. At the same time, the Creative Writing Workshop was held successfully on Zhuhai Campus. Teachers and students expressed their opinions and held heated discussions on the writing skills reflected on the prize-winning works in the Creative Writing Contest.
04 Contest for Outstanding Paper Awards and Award Ceremony for Creative Writing Contest
On the morning of May 16th, 2021, the 2021 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Contest for Outstanding Paper Awards in Foreign Languages and Translation Studies and Award Ceremony for Creative Writing Contest were held successfully. Excellent paper writers participated in the contest through the combination of online and offline. Ten participants from The University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Jinan University, Shanghai International Studies University and other universities presented their papers through live demonstration or video conference, and answered the questions raised by the judges. Later, winners of the two academic contests were announced on the spot, and the award ceremony was held online and offline. In the end, Wang Cheng, Party Secretary of SIS, delivered the closing speech to conclude the Academic Exchanges.
05 Dialogue to Zhongshan City
On the morning of May 17th, 2021, some participants visited the Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen to appreciate the city culture and the historic imprints. They also visited the Kimka Digital Media Industrial Park to feel the vitality and the creativity of Internet companies. Through the development of the Greater Bay Area and the city, participants better understood the responsibilities on their shoulders as young students majoring in foreign languages.
The activities in four days were highly recommended by guests and participants for the novel forms, thoughtful arrangements, colorful experiences and rich benefits.

Formerly known as a forum, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Postgraduate Academic Exchanges in Foreign Languages and Translation Studies now has become a more standard academic event after six years of development. It is also a bridge for young students from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau to exchange academic views and promote friendships. Consistent with the development of the Greater Bay Area, the event not only facilitates the development of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, but also plays an important role in helping teachers and students from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau exchange academic views, cultivating talents in foreign languages, and promoting the love for our country.
